Whenever you are faced with an error and before trying to adjust anything in the settings of your computer, it is advisable to create a system restore point and make a backup of all the personal data. If you make it into a regular habit to back up your computer, this simple activity will save you a lot of grief in the future.
Fix 1. Open the Registry Editor.
To do that, simply type ‘regedit’ in the Search field in the bottom left corner of the Control Panel on your PC. Next you will be able to delete the corrupted Registry keys:
- HKLMSoftwareClassesChrome
- HKLMSoftwareClassesChromeHTMLopencommandDelegateExecute
This will disable Chrome’s AppID, which should solve the issue you’re having. Don’t forget to restart your PC! You should keep in mind, however, that when Chrome updates itself (and it does so automatically), you will probably find these keys in the same place again. You will have to do the same manipulation manually each time Chrome updates.
Fix 2. Update Chrome.
As simple as it sounds, you might just be having a hiccup that Chrome has already fixed. Try updating the browser to see if you need to be making any adjustments whatsoever. You can also uninstall and reinstall Chrome if the update has not worked as a fix. Sometimes, it’s the most obvious “turn it off and on again” option, don’t be a snob and use it!
Fix 3. A simple enough Chrome hack would be to pin a new Chrome icon to Start.
To make sure this fix has worked, try navigating to this folder: C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalGoogleChromeApplication – and check if the file chrome.exe works. After that, pin the Chrome icon back to Start and see if the issue was fixed.
