SearchFilterHost.exe is known to consume excessive CPU and cause up to 100% overall CPU usage on computers running Windows Vista. This problem can be fixed in two ways: a) disable the indexing of .xml files; b) disable indexing altogether if you don’t use Windows Search.

 To disable the indexing of .xml files: 

  1. Click on Start and go to the Control Panel
  2. Open Indexing Options and go to the Modify tab
  3. Exclude .xml files and click OK 

To disable indexing: 

  1. Click on Start and type services.msc in the Search bar. Hit Enter
  2. Locate the Windows Search service, right-click on it and go to Properties
  3. Select Disabled in the Startup type dropdown box
  4. Click Apply, then click OK and reboot your computer
