Many Windows users have shared their concern about the high CPU usage and in case you&#8217;re in such a situation, don&#8217;t worry, you&#8217;re in good hands.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s tutorial shares everything you need to know about MsMpEng.exe.<\/p>\n<h2>What is MsMpEng.exe in Windows 10?<\/h2>\n<p>The MsMpEng.exe file or Antimalware Service Executable is an app developed by Microsoft and is part of Windows Defender. It&#8217;s responsible for real-time protection and performs the heavy work of detecting malware, worms, spyware, and viruses. If it finds any suspicious items on your PC, it quarantines or removes them.<\/p>\n<p>The process also scans your computer and prevents spyware infections from tampering with your operating system. Considering the significance of this process, terminating it can compromise the security of your system.<\/p>\n<p>MsMpEng.exe has two main features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Real-time protection. This service is associated with Windows Defender, and one of its main purposes is to protect your system. This means that it is constantly scanning your files and applications in real time.<\/li>\n<li>Full-Scan feature. This feature scans all the files on your computer if you have scheduled it to run whenever you connect to a network, when the computer wakes up or if you\u2019ve set the scan to run on a daily basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The thing is, heavy CPU and RAM usage are the side effects of this process, and when it is performing a full scan on your system, your computer may hang, freeze, or load programs slower than usual.<\/p>\n<h2>Is Msmpeng.Exe Safe?<\/h2>\n<p>Since .exe indicates an executable file, you must be asking yourself, \u201cIs MsMpENg.exe a virus or a trusted file belonging to the Windows Operating system?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First off, MsMpEng.exe is not malware or spyware. Alternatively, press the Windows Key+I, and then open \u201cUpdate &amp; Security\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Go to Windows Security &gt; Virus and threat protection.<\/li>\n<li>Open the \u201cManage settings\u201d link under the \u201cVirus and threat protection settings\u201d section.<\/li>\n<li>Find the \u201cExclusions\u201d section, and then select \u201cAdd or remove exclusions\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Click \u201cAdd an exclusion\u201d, and then select \u201cFolder\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Look for the \u201cWindows Defender\u201d folder, and select it.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, click \u201cSelect Folder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This will exclude the Windows Defender folder from being scanned by its own application, which may significantly reduce the high CPU usage.<\/p>\n<h2>Fix 2: Limit CPU Usage<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Task Manager by right-clicking the \u201cTaskbar\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Open the \u201cDetails\u201d tab.<\/li>\n<li>Locate MsMpEng.exe, and right-click it.<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201cSet affinity\u201d, and then choose the CPU limit threshold that you want MsMpEng.exe to use.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Fix 3: Reschedule Windows Defender Using Task Scheduler<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows Key, and then type task scheduler.<\/li>\n<li>Select the first result, which should be &#8220;Task Scheduler\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Expand \u201cTask Scheduler Library\u201d on the left pane, and navigate to this path: \u00a0Microsoft\/Windows\/Windows Defender.<\/li>\n<li>Look for \u201cWindows Defender Scheduler Scan\u201d on the right pane, and highlight it.<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201cProperties\u201d, located under the \u201cActions\u201d pane.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the \u201cConditions\u201d tab, and disable the \u201cStart the task only if the computer is idle for:\u201d, \u201cStart the task only if the computer is on AC power\u201d, and \u201cStart only if the following network connection is available\u201d options.<\/li>\n<li>Click \u201cOK\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Now back to the \u201cTask Scheduler\u201d window, select the \u201cProperties\u201d option again.<\/li>\n<li>Open the \u201cTriggers\u201d tab and select \u201cNew\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select the \u201cWeekly\u201d or \u201cMonthly\u201d option and then choose your preferred day.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you check the \u201cEnabled\u201d box and then click \u201cOK\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>When you&#8217;re done, go back to the \u201cTask Scheduler\u201d main window and repeat the same process for the other three schedules, namely: Windows Defender Cache Maintenance, Windows Defender Cleanup, and Windows Defender Verification.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Fix 4: Turn Off Windows Defender<\/h2>\n<p>Before you disable Windows Defender, make sure you have another antivirus program installed on your PC. With advanced technology, you can trust the application to offer maximum protection against malware attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Now, to turn off Windows Defender, there are two approaches you can employ:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a)\u00a0Using Local Group Policy<\/li>\n<li>b)\u00a0Using the Registry<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Using the Local Group Policy<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows Key+R, and type gpedit.msc in the \u201cRun\u201d dialog box.<\/li>\n<li>Hit \u201cEnter\u201d or click \u201cOK\u201d to open the Local Group Policy Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following path: Computer Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; Windows Components &gt; Windows Defender Antivirus.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click \u201cTurn off Windows Defender Antivirus\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201cEnabled\u201d, and then click Apply &gt; OK.<\/li>\n<li>Restart your PC and see if the system is running normally.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Using the Registry<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows Key+R, and then type regedit.<\/li>\n<li>Click \u201cOK\u201d or press \u201cEnter\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following path: \u00a0HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows Defender<\/li>\n<li>If you see the \u201cDisableAntiSpyware\u201d option, double-click it and change its value to \u201c1\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u2019t see it, you can easily create it by right-clicking on a blank space on the right pane, and then select DWORD (32-bit) Value &gt; New.<\/li>\n<li>Name it DisableAntiSpyware. Double-click it and change its value to \u201c1\u201d in the Value data:\u201d box.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor. Windows Defender should now be turned off.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Like we mentioned earlier, it is highly risky to run your computer without any antivirus or anti-malware program installed. Therefore, ensure that you find a reliable one before making these changes to your system.<\/p>\n<h2>Fix 5: Disable Sample Submission<\/h2>\n<p>Sample Submission is a Windows feature that sends viruses or malware to Microsoft for analysis. This aims to improve the functionality of Windows Defender and make it more secure. However, this feature can cause high disk and CPU usage, therefore affecting your PC\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true for users running older computers or with slow internet speeds. You can fix this problem by disabling the Sample Submission feature.<\/p>\n<p>To do this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows Key+I, and then open Update &amp; Security.<\/li>\n<li>Next, go to Windows Security &gt; Virus and threat protection.<\/li>\n<li>Open the \u201cManage settings\u201d link under \u201cVirus and threat protection settings\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Look for \u201cAutomatic sample submission\u201d and click the toggle button to turn it off.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Windows will no longer send sample files to Microsoft for analysis.
